What Are The Best Shingles For Your Roof?: Pros and Cons of Each Type of Shingle

When it’s time to replace your roof, you want to make sure you pick the best shingles for your roof. If you’re not familiar with the different types of shingles that are available, you may be wondering what your options are and which will be right for your home. Each type has its pros and cons, so we’re going to take a look at the more common ones so you can pick the best kind for your roof.

The Best Shingles For Your Roof

Before you decide which shingles are the best ones to go with, you need to know what you’re looking for and what the different types of shingles offer. The most common choice is asphalt, as they are fairly affordable and simple to install. They come in a wide range of colors and can fit any style.

Tile, metal, and slate are all stylish alternatives to the traditional asphalt shingles, but they are more expensive. On that note, asphalt shingles do come in a variety of looks these days and get be a great choice for most homeowners. Slate is a popular choice for older homes, such as Gothic and Victorian houses from the 1800s. In Florida and the Southwest, the Mediterranean and Spanish-style homes are popular, so you often see homes that have tile roofing. Tile is ideal in these regions because it helps reflect heat.

As you can imagine, because asphalt tiles are such an affordable option, they are the most popular choice. Some other common types of shingles include:

Asphalt Shingles

Pros: Inexpensive, easy to install, easy to replace, looks great on most homes

Cons: Can be vulnerable to wind uplift (especially if installed improperly), can crack

Slate Shingles

Pros: Thin material, long lifespan, looks great on Victorian homes

Cons: Heavy overall, difficult installation means higher labor cost

Wood Shingles

Pros: Relatively affordable, lightweight, rustic aesthetic

Cons: Easily damaged by water without proper drainage

Metal Roof Shingles

Pros: Comes in a variety of options: copper, steel, aluminum, tin. Very long lifespan, modern appearance

Cons: Can be very expensive

Solar Shingles

Pros: Each is a tiny solar panel, so you can use them to power your home, advanced technology

Cons: One of the most expensive options

Tile Shingles

Pros: Helps block heat, reducing energy costs, pest resistant, long lifespan

Cons: Heavier weight

Rubber Shingles

Pros: Lasts long with low maintenance, environmentally friendly, repairs are easy

Cons: Installation can be tricky

How To Determine What the Best Shingles For Your Roof Will Be

There are more than a dozen popular types of shingles and roofing materials available on the market. Choosing the best ones for your roof can certainly be overwhelming if you don’t know what you’re looking for or if you’re unfamiliar with the many varieties of shingles on the market. When it comes to picking the best shingles, there are a handful of things you’ll want to think about before deciding on the right shingles.

Lifespan

One of the biggest things to think about when picking out shingles is how long they are likely to last you. No matter what type of roofing materials you choose, they will all need to be replaced at some point. The lifespan of your roof is impacted by several factors, such as weather conditions and climate.

Various roofing types have different estimated lifespans. Regular maintenance and mild weather can keep your roof in better condition. Depending on the material you can expect:

Asphalt: 20 years

Fiber Cement: 25 years

Wood Shake: 30 years

Metal: 50 years

Tile: 50 years

Slate: 100 years

Cost

With most home improvement projects, the cost can often make or break things. If you are working with a smaller budget, you’ll likely want to look into asphalt shingles. Keep in mind that, not only will you have to pay for the materials, but you will also have to factor in installation and labor costs. For a new roof, most homeowners can expect to spend anywhere from $4,500 and $10,500.

Architecture

The slope of your roof can impact what shingles would be best for your home. If your roof has a really steep slope, heavier materials such as clay tiles or slate may not be the best option for your home. You should also take into consideration the weight limits of your structure. The dead load tolerance of a building refers to the total amount of weight a structure can hold safely. The average home can generally hold about 15 pounds per square foot.

Climate

If you live somewhere with mild weather year-round, you don’t have to worry so much about how the climate will impact your roof, but most people deal with some extremes, at least part of the year. If you want something that will help keep your home cool, clay tile is a great choice. If you have lots of wind, avoid rubber shingles.

Aesthetics

While it’s not the number one thing to consider, curb appeal is a big deal, especially if you ever decide to sell your home. If your home has a certain architectural style, most people want to stick with the style. So if you have a Mediterranean-style home, asphalt shingles would likely look out of place. You can also use your choice of shingles to stick with a color scheme that you like.

Companies That Will Help You Determine & Install The Best Shingles For Your Roof

When choosing a company to help you get the most out of your roofing choices, you should consider a few factors to make sure you get the best value for your money.

Be sure they come highly recommended, both online as well as in-person. This means check impartial resources like Google, as well as word of mouth from people locally that you trust.

Make sure they are fully insured. Not only in the event that something goes wrong with the roof but in the event of an injury while they’re working. They should also have current business licensing.

If you are in the Austin, San Antonio, or Houston areas and need shingles installed or serviced, reach out to expert local roofers to help identify the right materials for the job, and to have them expertly installed.

Professional Roofer: Skip DIY Roofing | LOA Construction

Skip The DIY Roofing Method: Why You Need to Leave Roofing Repairs To a Professional Roofer

Many people consider the  DIY route after considering the expense of some roofing projects. Usually, this is because they feel that they can’t trust a roofing company to give them an honest estimate, or they think that they can do it just as well themselves. In almost all cases these are the farthest one can get from the truth.

Even if you are a skilled craftsman, or have even done roofing before, there are still a number of reasons that you should leave it up to a professional. If you’re on the fence about using a roofer, hopefully, we can set your mind at ease. We’ll also give you some tips on finding the best, most reliable roofer in your area.

Why You Need a Professional Roofer & Why You Need To Stop Trying To Do It Yourself

If you are considering a homebrew or DIY roofing solution, you should be aware of some of the drawbacks of a self-service job. Some can be more significant than others, depending on your situation and what is important to you.

DIY Can Be Incredibly Costly

A large portion of people that attempt a DIY roofing job do it because they see an estimate, look at supply prices, do a little math, and think they’re getting taken for a bunch of extra money. While a portion of the estimate for a roofing repair is obviously for materials, a large percentage of it helps subsidize other costs.

Sure, you may be able to get a great deal on a pallet of shingles, but once you have them, do you have all of the tools and expertise to install them? If you have a two-story or larger home, you may need special scaffolding or expensive ladders to be able to safely mount your roof. Expenses like these can easily outstrip the cost of basic materials.

Insurance May Not Pay Out

If you are attempting to fix an issue caused by an event that your homeowners’ insurance may normally cover, you should be very careful of their reimbursement requirements for situations involving roofing repair.

In many situations, the insurance company may only deal with the roofer regarding the repairs and the cost estimates. Even if they do not deal directly with the roofer, they will often require some proof of job completion by a qualified party. This means that if you fix your own roof, and you aren’t a licensed and insured roofer, the adjuster may decide not to pay your claim.

Potential For Future Issues

One of the reasons that insurance companies will generally not cover DIY roofing repair, is the potential for future issues. This can be from any number of reasons like the roof problem was not fully identified, located, diagnosed, or repaired initially.

If the repair was completed, but not done up to proper industry standard and building code requirements, it could lead to the leak reappearing or causing more damage. If the roofing repair was a DIY job, and it results in more damage to the home, it is nearly assured that the homeowners’ insurance policy will not cover the costs of repair due to negligence.

Getting It Done Safely

Let’s face it, most of us could never safely complete an entire roof repair job solo in any sort of reasonable time frame, even in the prime of our life. You get that great deal on materials and happen to have all the tools you need, and now the final hurdle of getting your roof fixed comes: getting help.

Even if you happen to have a few friends or neighbors that might be available to help you out on a weekend, you have to worry about their safety too. This means making sure they know how to safely navigate a roof while doing necessary work. If anything happens to this ad hoc crew, the homeowner is liable, and it’s their insurer that’s going to cut checks for injury claims.

What You Need To Look For When Hiring a Professional Roofer

Ask Those Close To You

It’s the age-old word of mouth reference, and it’s worth its weight in gold. Ask your nearby family and friends if they’ve ever needed roofing work, who they used, and if they’re happy with the process and results.

This is a great way to get information on local companies that have a history of working with people you know. This is also perfect for finding out who not to work with because once someone is dissatisfied they will not forget it.

The Internet Never Forgets

Look at the online reviews, such as via Google, for any companies that you’re looking at. Look at the good reviews as well as the bad. It’s important to use a service like Google since the company cannot delete unfavorable information.

Ensure Licensing & Insurance

This is often just a formality to prove that they have the required coverage and are operating within the law. The business licensing and insurance information are often already printed and listed on an info sheet or pricing guide, customers need only ask for it.

Ask For Referrals

If you feel close to picking a company, ask them for a list of referrals. Many companies will have a list of customers that have been agreed to be contacted to serve as a referral, should someone want it. A referral should give an honest first-hand account of their experience with the company.

Have Your Roof Inspected

Once you have decided on a company, have them come out and perform an initial roof inspection. This will often be done free of charge and can be scheduled at your convenience. This will show a baseline of everything that may need to be addressed with your roof.

The Best Professional Roofer For Your Roofing Job

If you are reconsidering your DIY roof job and feel like you might be better off using a professional roofer, reach out to expert local roofers today. You can schedule a free inspection at a time that is convenient to you. Let us do the heavy lifting for you, so you can get back to what really matters to you the most.

Tips for Maintaining an Asphalt Roof

Regular Maintenance Requirements for Asphalt Roofs

Asphalt roofing is by far the most common type of roof that you’ll see around Central Texas and the rest of the U.S. Although more homeowners are choosing metal roofs these days, the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association estimates that 80% of homes have an asphalt roof.

People choose asphalt roofs because they are cost effective, have a lifespan of 25-30 years and are easy to maintain. The last point is important, because low maintenance doesn’t mean maintenance-free. To get the best performance and most years out of an asphalt shingle roof, regular maintenance is needed.

In this post our roofing experts are sharing their advice on which regular maintenance measures are most important for an asphalt roof. By performing regular maintenance your asphalt roof should last for years to come.

Debris Removal and Cleaning for Asphalt Roofs

The top coating of asphalt shingles is there to provide a protective layer, but it needs protection as well. When debris falls on the roof and collects it can lead to a variety of issues.

In addition to clogging the gutter system, tree limbs can rub the top layer of granules off asphalt shingles or cause them to break. Even if the shingles aren’t damaged, a buildup of debris could cause mold, algae and mildew to grow on the roof.

Unfortunately, many property owners think the debris will simply blow off. Not only is this a safety hazard, it might also be an inaccurate assumption. Many roofs have eaves and channels where debris can get stuck and won’t go away unless someone physically removes it.

So what can you do? The simple solution is to clean the roof. That’s right, you can clean an asphalt roof.

How regularly you need to clear off debris depends on what trees are around your home. Aim to clean the roof at least once every month or whenever debris is collecting, particularly in the fall.

Steps for clearing debris and cleaning an asphalt roof include:

  • • Start by bagging up as much debris as possible.
  • • Next, sweep off the remaining debris. Pay careful attention around eaves and roof edges since the texture of an asphalt roof can cause debris to cling.
  • • Clean out the gutters and downspout so that water can flow freely and drain away from the structure.
  • • Remove any mold, mildew or algae with a 50/50 mixture of water and bleach.

If you find that there’s a lot of debris that’s causing issues, talk with a professional roofer about some possible solutions. At LOA we’ve helped clients reduce debris buildup with solutions like mesh grate protectors that are placed in the eaves.

Cut Back Overhanging Limbs and Plants

Something you can do that’s related to debris removal is to cut back trees and plants that are contributing to the problem. The benefits of pruning plants extends beyond less debris gathering on the roof. Overhanging tree limbs can cause significant damage to an asphalt roof. Plants that are touching the roof line also give pests and animals easy access to your roof where they can get inside and do more damage.

While you’re doing the debris removal and cleaning, look to see if there are any tree limbs and plants that need to be cut back. You may find you’ll need a tree trimming service for larger branches that need more than pruning.

Annual Roof Inspection

Having an annual roof inspection is a good idea for any property with asphalt roofing. It’s a great way of knowing how the roof is aging and what condition it’s currently in. You can do a DIY roof inspection or have a professional roofer assess the entire roof, paying careful attention to any seams, flashing and spots where vents are protruding out of the roof. Look for signs of damage, moisture and loose hardware. Doing an annual roof inspection will help you catch minor roofing issues that are easy to fix before they become major issues.

Did you know LOA offers FREE roof inspections? Schedule your roof inspection to find out how your asphalt roof looks!

Get Your Asphalt Roof Inspected After a Storm

Here in Central Texas storms can blow through basically any time of year. There have been times when we experience snow storms, hail storms and severe thunderstorms all in a single year. Ice, freezing temperatures, hail and high winds can all significantly damage an asphalt roof, even if it was recently installed.

If your area was hit by a storm, it’s always best to have a roof inspection to look for wind, water and hail damage. A professional inspection is going to be needed to file a claim to cover any repairs or a roof replacement. At LOA we help our clients through the claims process and can even contact the insurer on their behalf.

Add an Asphalt Roof Coating

An asphalt roof coating can be applied as a maintenance measure with added benefits. The roof coating can add an extra layer of UV protection. It can also be applied to an older asphalt roof to make it more durable and extend the life a little longer. Another option is to add a coating with copper-coated granules to prevent the growth of algae.

Ultimately, a roof coating will make it even easier to maintain an asphalt roof and increase its lifespan, which makes it a good investment.

Why You May Want to Hire a Roofer for Asphalt Roof Maintenance

It’s possible for a property owner to maintain an asphalt roof on their own, but enlisting the help of a professional roofer may be the better option in some situations. You may want to hire a roofer for asphalt roof maintenance if:

  • Safety is a concern – Going up on a roof is always risky. Some property owners may decide it’s best to let a professional handle overhead maintenance that can’t be done from the ground.
  • You don’t have the time – If you simply don’t have time to do asphalt roof maintenance yourself, you’ll need someone else to do it for you.
  • Clean out the gutters and downspout so that water can flow freely and drain away from the structure.
  • You don’t have the tools – Some property owners call us for their roof maintenance needs because they aren’t equipped to do it themselves and would rather invest in maintenance services than the equipment.
  • You can get the service for free – Not every asphalt roof maintenance service is offered for free, but things like an annual roof inspection are often complimentary.
  • Roof repairs are also needed – If you know that your asphalt roof needs a repair or two, it may be cost-effective to have the roofer perform maintenance services while they’re doing the repair.

Let the professional roofers at LOA handle your asphalt roof maintenance! You can stress less knowing that you’re getting expert roof maintenance services that will help extend the life of your asphalt roof.

Recognizing the importance of a durable and reliable roofing system, LOA Construction offers expert commercial roofing services in San Antonio, ensuring your investment is protected.

Understanding the Cost Factors for Roof Size, Materials, & Shape/Pitch

The cost of commercial roofing in San Antonio can vary widely, influenced by a range of factors including the roof’s size, complexity, and the roofing materials chosen for the project. To provide property owners with a precise estimate, it’s crucial to consider these variables.

Roof Size

The larger the roof, the higher the cost. This is due to the increased amount of materials and labor required.

For instance, replacing a 2,000 square-foot roof might cost between $6,000 and $8,000, whereas a 3,000 square-foot roof could exceed $10,000.

Materials

The selection of roofing materials greatly affects the overall cost. In San Antonio, asphalt shingles offer an economical choice, ranging from $2.50 to $4 per square foot.

Architectural shingles, a more premium option, cost between $4.50 and $7.50 per square foot. For those seeking longevity, materials like metal, slate, TPO, flat, and tile, though more expensive upfront, provide greater durability and lifespan.

Roof Shape & Pitch

The complexity of the roof’s design can also impact the cost. Simple, conventional roofs are typically less expensive to replace.

However, roofs with steep slopes, multiple peaks, or intricate designs may incur additional installation fees due to the need for specialized expertise and extended labor time.
