What to Do When Roof Shingles or Tiles Start to Slip

Shingles and tiles are designed to link together to create a waterproof outer layer for the roofing system. But every now and then shingles can start to slip and slide. You may notice it on the roof first, or you may have discovered a leak on the inside that tips you off to the problem.

Regardless of how it happened, you’ll need to repair shingles and tiles if they are sliding out of place, or you’ll have more damage to deal with. Here’s what we recommend that you do to get the problem resolved quickly.

Why Asphalt Shingles Slip and Slide

Slipping and sliding is never something you want to see up on your roof. It’s something you’ll want to investigate further since things are literally out of place. The problem could be isolated to a few roof shingles or tiles, but it could also be the first sign that you have a bigger roofing issue.

Here are a few of the most common reasons why tiles and shingles slide around on the roof.

• Incorrect Installation

Many roof issues can come down to improper installation. Often the signs of improper installation show up in the shingles or tiles first even if the problem didn’t originate there.

• Corroded Nails and Fasteners

When the fasteners that hold the roof shingles or tiles in place fail, that’s when slipping and sliding begins. This is one of the most common reasons for slipping, especially if you have roof tiles that require special nails to stay in place. The roofing nails are exposed to the elements and can corrode over time. Without regular maintenance inspections this problem will go unnoticed until shingles and tiles begin slipping.

• Improper Underlayment

It may not have been the installation but rather the wrong materials that lead to slipping and sliding problems. When the wrong underlayment is used the tiles or shingles on top of it won’t lie in place like they should.

• Strong Winds

High winds always have the possibility of pulling up shingles and tiles, which causes them to come loose. If your roofing was fine before high winds blew through but now tiles are sliding around you may have wind damage.

Damaged shingles and broken tiles can end up slipping and sliding around. When this is the case, the problem is usually limited to just a loose shingle or two rather than widespread roof damage.

What to do If Loose Shingles or Tiles Are Sliding Out of Place

Because loose roof tiles or shingles that are slipping around can compromise the structural integrity of the roof, it’s a problem that you’re going to want to get checked out right away. Here are the steps that we recommend homeowners take if they think slipping and sliding is the issue.

Check Your Warranties

The first thing you’ll want to do is check the warranty for your roofing materials as well as any workmanship warranty you received from the roofer. If the roof tiles or shingles prematurely failed or were installed improperly the repairs may be covered.

Check Your Insurance Policy If There Was a Wind Storm

If the slipping started after a strong wind blew through you may be able to get the damage repaired through your property insurance. Check your policy to see if storm and wind damage is covered before reaching out to file a claim.
