Roof Repair When Ice and Snow Removal Goes Wrong

In Central Texas we don't have to deal with snow or ice often, but when we do it can cause serious damage. The biggest problem is few property owners are prepared for freezing weather and don't know how to handle the situation. Often attempts to clear snow and ice dams off a roof create more problems rather than helping.

Roof Issues That Can Occur During Ice and Snow Removal

In Austin, winter weather doesn't typically involve heavy snow that can cause roof problems and structural issues. More often, if it snows we experience wet snow that creates moisture problems similar to rain.

Regardless, snowstorms have been known to happen, and in some areas of the country they are a regular occurrence. Snow accumulating on the roof is never a good thing, but trying to remove it without taking the proper precautions could be even worse.

  • Damaging Ice Dams

An ice dam is one of the worst results of a freeze for a roof. This is when warmth from the attic causes melting snow on the roof that then refreezes, usually near the roof's edge. When there's an ice dam water won't drain properly causing debris build up and pooling on the roof. Worse still is that the ice that does melt will seep down under the roofing materials creating water damage.
Simply scraping the ice off isn't the solution for ice dams. That can cause significant damage, and it won't solve the problem that might be affecting the entire roof.

  • Damaged Shingles

Any tiny cracks that are in asphalt shingles can become bigger after frost, snow or ice settles on your roof. Porous materials are also susceptible to damage because water can seep into the tiny openings then freeze widening the hole or crack.
However, an even bigger problem can occur if someone attempts to scrape off the ice. Even the most durable roof will likely be damaged on the surface from the scraping. It usually makes the roof vulnerable to more damage than if you let the ice melt on its own.

  • Structural Damage and Weakening

The weight of the ice and snow alone can put a structural strain on some roofs. If someone tries to go up on the roof or equipment puts added pressure on the roof it could make matters worse. This is an issue to really watch out for if you have a flat roof because it's easy for snow and ice to accumulate, eventually causing a roof leak or worse.

Correcting Roof Damage From Snow and Ice Removal

Correcting damage from snow or ice removal needs to happen as soon as possible because you never know when the next snowfall may be, but you can't rush the process or more damage could be done.

Wait For the Ice and Snow to Melt

Before repairs can be made the ice and snow needs to be gone, preferably melting away. If there's snow that isn't frozen it can be removed with a roof rake. There are also steamers that can be used if ice needs to be melted.

Get a Professional Roofer to do an Inspection

While this may seem like a pretty clear roofing issue, there are contributing factors that need to be figured out to ensure the same thing doesn't happen next time there's snow. A professional roofer can analyze the roof, attic insulation and ventilation to determine what is causing the roofing problems and how to fix them.

Make Repairs to Prevent Snow Buildup and Ice Dams

In addition to replacing damaged shingles, you'll need to address the underlying issues that caused snow buildup and ice to form on your roof.

If there was a heavy buildup of snow on your roof it could be from debris that had already collected or a low spot on the roof that allows snow and rainwater to pool.

Fixing ice dams requires insulation and ventilation improvements. Insulation will probably need to be added in the attic so that rising heat doesn't cause snowmelt. Ventilation also helps regulate the temperature and prevents condensation that makes ice dam formation more likely.

Schedule Roof Replacement When It Warms Up

Roofing materials can handle a lot but installing them in the cold isn't a good idea. Any kind of roof installation should wait if the temperature is below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Anything colder can compromise the materials and shorten the roof's lifespan.

Keep Your Roof in Good Condition

Roof maintenance is a precautionary measure that needs to be taken. You can't prevent freezing temperatures, but you can ensure that your roofing material is in the best condition possible to withstand the ice and snow that can cause roof leaks. Regular inspections and maintenance also ensures that your roof is free of debris that can promote snow and ice buildup.
