When Your Roofing Material Has a Tear You Need Roof Repairs

A roof puncture is a tear in the roofing materials that's the result of pressure. It could be from a sharp object hitting the roof or the weight of foot traffic. Here in Central Texas, hail is a common cause for puncture tears on roofs with asphalt shingles. Vermin and pests are another reason we get called out to repair roof penetrations.

The experienced roofers at LOA have seen it all, and puncture tears can be hard to spot if you don't know what to look for. Property owners need to be aware of the signs there's a roof tear and what to do if you have one.

Signs There's a Puncture Tear in the Roofing Materials

All types of roofs can experience a puncture tear, even metal roofs and tile roofs. Flat roofs are more at risk of punctures simply because the force is more direct compared to a gabled roof, especially when there's a lot of foot traffic.

A puncture could be limited to the surface materials, or it could go all the way through the roof deck. No matter how deep it goes, a small puncture is an issue that can lead to serious roof damage.

  • Roof Leaks

One of the most obvious signs that you have a roof puncture is a leaky roof. Any time you spot a roof leak it needs to be investigated because it's a clear indicator there's an issue that has to be addressed. The source of the leak could be from a puncture, but there are other causes that need to be ruled out before roof repairs can be recommended.

  • Exposed Underlayment

Missing shingles or panels that expose the underlayment are a big risk factor for roof penetrations. Without the surface layer, the thin underlayment that protects the roof deck and attic below can be easily punctured and the watertight seal will be compromised. If the underlayment can be seen it's an indicator that you could already have a roof tear.
  • Damaged Flashing

The flashing is another part of the roofing system that can indicate there's a puncture. Like the underlayment, if you see the flashing or notice that it's damaged there's a good chance you have a puncture in the roof.

  • Other Age-Related Roof Problems

A puncture becomes more likely the older a roof gets simply because the roofing materials aren't as resilient as they used to be. If you notice other signs that your roof is nearing the end of its lifespan, such as sagging or degradation of the materials, there's a possibility your roof has punctures.

What to Do If There's a Tear in the Existing Roofing System

It's tempting to think roof sealant or some roof cement will solve the problem, but that temporary fix isn't the best way to protect the structural integrity when the roofing material has been punctured. If you want to prevent further damage, then the roof is going to need to be properly repaired.

If you think there could be a roof tear you should:

Call a Professional Roofing Contractor

A roof tear is a problem that needs to be evaluated by a professional roofer. On a call the roofing contractor can narrow down the potential issues based on what you are seeing. They may even be able to give you a better idea of the extent of the roof repairs that will be needed, timeline to complete the work and the approximate cost.

Line Up a Roof Inspection to Find the Cause of the Problem

The only way for a roofer to know if you have a puncture for sure is by inspecting all parts of the roofing system. A roof puncture can affect different layers of the roof right down to the roof deck and existing flashing. If a puncture is found, the roofer will need to determine the cause and whether the surrounding shingles or panels are also affected.

Assess the Damage

The roof repair is going to depend on the extent of the damage. If there's a single small tear without any water damage roofing cement can be used to patch the affected area in the short-term. However, if there are numerous punctures roof replacement may be necessary.

Schedule Roof Repairs

Once you know what you're dealing with the roofer can make recommendations and you can schedule the roof repairs. If the punctures were created by falling debris in a storm or it's the result of hail damage, your property insurance may cover the cost of the repairs. If that's the case, an insurance claim will need to be filed prior to beginning the work.

LOA is a team of trusted contractors that are able to handle complex roof repairs. We offer FREE inspections to evaluate damage and provide the most accurate estimate possible. We'll even help you file a claim if the roof repairs are covered by your insurance.
