What to do When Roof Blisters Pop Up on Asphalt Shingles & Other Roofing Materials

The roof is a huge visual feature of a structure. But the condition of the roofing system is going to affect the curb appeal as much as the structural integrity of a home or building. That's why roof blistering is an imperfection you want to pay attention to and correct as soon as you see it.

Blistering isn't just an unsightly roof problem. It points to bigger underlying issues with a residential and commercial roofing system.

What Are Roof Blisters?

Roof blisters get their name because it's the same effect that happens to burned skin. With roof blisters a bubble or bump will form on the surface of the roofing system. Inside the bubble is either water or air that's trapped between the layers of material. Small roof blisters may just need to be monitored, but large blistering is something that needs to be looked at.

Some types of roofing materials are more likely to have blistering. It's a common problem for asphalt shingle roofs, modified bitumen roofs and flat roofs - but for very different reasons.

What Causes Roof Blistering?

  • Moisture Damage

Trapped moisture is one of the main causes for blistering. Moisture blisters can form on a variety of roof surfaces. It's very common on asphalt shingle roofs because moisture can get trapped between the layers of material if they are damaged. With single-ply roof membrane systems installation errors can lead to moisture getting trapped underneath and forming blisters. Flat roofs are at higher risk of roof blisters because excess moisture is more likely with no slope. You have to be very careful to ensure proper drainage in order to prevent roof blisters on a flat roofing system.

  • Inadequate Drainage

Sometimes the water doesn't need to penetrate through an asphalt shingle to cause blistering. It could happen from inadequate drainage that causes ponding water and excess moisture on top of the roof.

  • Poor Roof Installation

The easiest way to prevent roof blisters is to hire an experienced roofing contractor that knows what they are doing. Improper installation can lead to a lot of roofing problems, and blistering is one of them. An installation error that happens regularly is not allowing layers of roofing to dry completely.

  • Poor Ventilation

During the roofing installation process one thing that roofers can get wrong is adequate ventilation. Poor attic ventilation can hinder airflow, causing heat to get trapped and transfer to the roof. When the roofing materials heat up it can cause blister formation.

  • Fluctuations in Temperature

When hot air and cold air mix together it causes fluctuations in the temperature and condensation. Neither one is good for the roof. The fluctuations could be natural at certain times of year when the seasons are changing, but inadequate ventilation and attic insulation could also be a factor.

  • Product Defects

In some cases, roof blistering is the result of poorly made roofing materials. This can be the case if there's premature deterioration anywhere in the membrane. Asphalt shingle blisters could also be the result of trapped moisture or trapped air that happened during the manufacturing process.

Repairing Roof Blister Damage

Repairing roof blisters comes down to the cause, age of the roof and overall condition of the roofing system. The only way to know all that is to have a professional roofing contractor take a look at the situation.

Start With a Roof Inspection

The first step is to schedule a roof inspection. Many roofing contractors, including LOA, provide free roof inspections. Contact a local roofer with a good reputation to describe the issues you are seeing and provide information on your roofing system. Then schedule a time for the inspection, ideally at a time when you can be on-site.

Identify the Problem

What the roofing professional finds during the inspection will reveal what's causing the roof blisters. The roofer should also note any other signs of damage, documenting everything as they go.

Make the Roof Repairs ASAP to Fix Roof Blisters

After the inspection you'll receive a report noting the damage, causes and roof repair options. Inadequate attic ventilation is going to require a completely different solution from blistering that's caused by a defective product. And if the roofing material has blisters from a product defect you may be able to get that portion of the repair covered by a warranty.

At LOA we're so confident in our roof installation and repair services that we offer a 10-year workmanship warranty in addition to limited lifetime manufacturer warranties!
