Asphalt Shingle Roofs

Asphalt Roofing

Asphalt shingles make up the vast majority of roofing materials used in the United States. It’s estimated that anywhere between 75-80 percent of US homes use asphalt shingles. Their popularity comes from the fact that asphalt shingles are economical, fire-safe, and durable.

Asphalt Roofing Material

The “standard” asphalt shingle is the square butt strip shingle, elongated in shape, and available with one or three tabs. This product is made of a base mat of inorganic material (glass fibers, otherwise known as fiberglass). This base mat is given an asphalt coating, which provides weatherproofing. The mineral granules protect the shingles from the sun’s ultraviolet rays and provide the shingles with color and added protection against fire. Some homes may have asphalt shingles that use a base mat of organic material (cellulose fibers). These shingles were popular at one time but were discontinued, industry-wide, in 2005.

Asphalt Roof Replacement

Determining whether your asphalt roof needs to be repaired or replaced all together can be challenging. Discoloration, as well as curled, cracked, or blistering shingles, are all red flags that indicate damage to your roof. Other signs are harder to spot, such as granule loss over time. A properly installed asphalt shingle roof can last up to 20 years. That kind of investment should involve consultations with the experts. We can help you determine if damage exists and how extensive it truly is. If a replacement is necessary, we can help you make an informed decision on how to proceed.
