How the Calculator Works
LOA Construction and Roofing built this calculator to answer the first question almost every homeowner asks us: what will a new roof cost? It works the same way we start an estimate on a real roof.
- It estimates your roof’s area. Your roof is bigger than your floor plan. We divide your home’s living area by the number of stories to get the footprint, add the overhang at the eaves, and then account for the pitch, because a steeper roof covers more surface than a flat one over the same footprint.
- It prices the material you choose. Each material has an installed price per square foot, covering materials and labor, taken from the same ranges our team shares on our roof-type pages.
- It adjusts for the job. A second layer of old shingles to tear off, a steep pitch, extra stories, and a busy roof line all add time and materials, so each one moves the range.
The result is a low and a high number, not a single price. The range is honest about what we can’t see from a calculator: the condition of your decking, the flashing around chimneys and walls, and how the old roof was installed.
What Drives the Cost of a New Roof in Austin
Roof Size and Pitch
Size is the biggest factor. A steep roof also takes more care to work on safely, so crews move slower and need more equipment. That’s why the calculator asks you to pick the picture that looks most like your roof.
Material
Architectural shingles are the most common roof in Austin and usually the most affordable. Class 4 impact-resistant shingles cost more, but they’re built to stand up to the hail Central Texas sees every spring, and some insurers offer a discount for them. Metal lasts longer and reflects summer heat. Clay and concrete tile last the longest but are heavy and cost the most. Flat and low-slope roofs use membranes like TPO, EPDM, or modified bitumen instead. Our material quiz can help you compare them if you’re not sure.
Tear-Off
A replacement starts by removing the old roof down to the decking. Most roofs have one layer. If someone in the past nailed new shingles over old ones, both layers come off, and that adds labor and disposal.
Roof Line
Valleys, dormers, chimneys, skylights, and walls that meet the roof all need flashing and detail work. A simple roof with two or four planes goes faster than one with many angles.
What We Find Under the Old Roof
Rotted or soft decking can only be seen once the old roof is off. It isn’t in the calculator’s range. If we find it, we show you photos and explain the options before any extra work is done. No surprises.
When a Repair Makes More Sense
A new roof isn’t always the answer. Many roofs we inspect need a repair, not a replacement, and we’ll always be honest if that’s the case. If you’re not sure which you need, try our Repair or Replace? Roof Diagnostic or read about roof repair in Austin.
If a storm just came through, check the Central Texas Hail Map for reports near you. Hail damage is often covered by homeowner’s insurance, and LOA can assist with your insurance claim. See our page on hail damage repair for how that works.
Get Your Exact Price
Your range is a starting point. To get an exact price, LOA offers no-cost, same-day roof inspections, and drone inspections when you can’t be there. We’ll measure your roof, check the decking and flashing, and give you an honest, no-pressure estimate. You call the shots from there.

Frequently Asked Questions
How Accurate Is This Roof Cost Calculator?
It’s a realistic starting point based on the ranges our team sees on Austin-area roofs. Your exact price depends on things only an inspection can confirm, like the condition of the decking and the details of your roof line. That’s why every estimate here comes with an offer of a free inspection.
Does the Estimate Include Removing My Old Roof?
Yes. The range includes tearing off one layer of roofing. If your roof has two layers, choose that option and the range goes up to cover the extra labor and disposal.
Why Is My Roof Area Bigger Than My Home’s Square Footage?
Because a roof overhangs the walls and slopes up to a peak. A pitched roof covers more surface than the floor beneath it, and the steeper the pitch, the bigger the difference.
Why Can’t I Choose Shingles for a Flat Roof?
Shingles and tile need slope to shed water. Flat and low-slope roofs use sealed membranes like TPO, EPDM, or modified bitumen instead, so the calculator only shows materials that suit the pitch you chose.
Will Insurance Pay for a New Roof?
It depends on your policy and the cause of the damage. Storm and hail damage are often covered, while wear and age usually aren’t. LOA can inspect your roof, document any storm damage, and assist with your insurance claim.
What Happens After I Ask for an Inspection?
We’ll contact you to set a time, often the same day. A roofer inspects your roof, shows you what we found, and gives you a written estimate. There’s no pressure and no obligation to move forward.
